INVOCATION
P    In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C    Amen.

Psalm 103:1–13
1Bless the Lord, O my soul,
   and all that is within me,
   bless his holy name!
2Bless the Lord, O my soul,
   and forget not all his benefits,
3who forgives all your iniquity,
   who heals all your diseases,
4who redeems your life from the pit,
   who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
5who satisfies you with good
   so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
6The Lord works righteousness
   and justice for all who are oppressed.
7He made known his ways to Moses,
   his acts to the people of Israel.
8The Lord is merciful and gracious,
   slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
9He will not always chide,
   nor will he keep his anger forever.
10He does not deal with us according to our sins,
   nor repay us according to our iniquities.
11For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
   so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
12as far as the east is from the west,
   so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
13As a father shows compassion to his children,
   so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.

GLORIA IN EXCELSIS                                                                                                                              LSB 204
C    1 To God on high be glory
    And peace to all the earth;
    Goodwill from God in heaven
    Proclaimed at Jesus’ birth!
    We praise and bless You, Father;
    Your holy name, we sing—
    Our thanks for Your great glory,
    Lord God, our heav’nly King.

2 To You, O sole-begotten,
    The Father’s Son, we pray;
    O Lamb of God, our Savior,
    You take our sins away.
    Have mercy on us, Jesus;
    Receive our heartfelt cry,
    Where You in pow’r are seated
    At God’s right hand on high—

3 For You alone are holy;
    You only are the Lord.
    Forever and forever,
    Be worshiped and adored;
    You with the Holy Spirit
    Alone are Lord Most High,
    In God the Father’s glory.
    “Amen!” our glad reply.

P    Let us pray.
O God, the protector of all who trust in You, without whom nothing is strong and nothing is holy, multiply Your mercy on us that, with You as our ruler and guide, we may so pass through things temporal that we lose not the things eternal; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
 C   Amen.

HOLY GOSPEL
P    The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the fifteenth chapter.
C    Glory to You, O Lord.

   1Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear [Jesus]. 2And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.”
   3So he told them this parable: 4“What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? 5And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’ 7Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.
   8“Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it? 9And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.’ 10Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

P    This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C    Praise to You, O Christ.

APOSTLES’ CREED
C    I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
     maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
     who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
     born of the virgin Mary,
     suffered under Pontius Pilate,
     was crucified, died and was buried.
     He descended into hell.
     The third day He rose again from the dead.
     He ascended into heaven
     and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
     From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
     the holy Christian Church,
          the communion of saints,
     the forgiveness of sins,
     the resurrection of the body,
     and the life T everlasting. Amen.

SERMON

Luke 15:7
So Jesus says there is joy in heaven. May God forgive us for our lack of joy here on earth. We have struggles, suffering and pain. We have disappointments, regrets and frustrations. We have sin and death. But the thing is, we let all that get to us. We let life here on earth suck away our joy. Let’s keep remembering, let’s keep reminding each other what Jesus says, “There’s joy in heaven.”

God is in heaven. We are on earth. Heaven is so far away that we can’t see it from here. Heaven is so close that God sees us clearly, constantly. He knows everything about you. He has counted the hairs on your head.

That idea may seem incredible. What does God care about little ole me? The way Jesus tells it, God is very interested in people. Especially people like you. God is very interested in sinners like you. O sinner, that’s what you need to get out of this Gospel lesson today. God is interested in you. He’s pulling for you.

Now, when I call you a sinner, it’s not that I want to insult you. I’m simply identifying you, in terms of God’s word. It’s the way you should identify yourself. For your own good, for your own salvation, you need to identify yourself as the one who would be lost without the help of the Lord. You’re the lost one and your dear Jesus found you, picked you up, carried you, because He loved you.
These little parables that Jesus is telling here in Luke 15 are supposed to make you admit that you are the lost one. You are the straying sheep who has lost its way. You are the lost coin that has fallen from where you were meant to be, fallen from your special place -- dropped from the hand of your Lord and Master.

Because of your sins of thought, word and deed -- what you have done and what you have left undone -- because of that, you are that one sheep out of a hundred who has gotten where you shouldn’t be. You are the lost sheep, you are the lost coin and it’s your fault.
Now, you don’t have to admit that. Lots of people don’t. Lots of very good, upstanding, very religious and proper people would never admit that about themselves. The Pharisees and the Scribes were not about to admit their own sins, even as they were so ghastly appalled by the sinfulness of others.

So you can be like them. You don’t have to admit your sins, You don’t need to try and imagine that you are the lost sheep, in need of some special care. Then you don’t need to bother yourself with any of this. You don’t need the cross of Jesus or His resurrection. You don’t need His baptism or absolution. You don’t need His feeding, His guiding, His protecting. And you certainly don’t need His joy in heaven over some sinner who repents.

There are others who need all that. The miscreants on the streets; the dirty, loud ruffians who cause trouble; those who don’t know well enough to stay out of trouble. If it’s that kind of people who seem to be the lost, and this is about them, then there’s nothing here for you.

But if you know that you are flesh and blood, if you know that are mortal, if you know your weaknesses, and inabilities, your guilt and your shame, if you’ve seen what it’s like to live as if it didn’t matter whether you were lost or found, if you want to say nothing more than “Lord, have mercy on me. Christ, have mercy on me. Lord, have mercy on me a sinner.” Then Jesus has a word for you.

There’s joy in heaven, says Jesus. And He gives a very specific reason for the joy: One sinner, any sinner, repents. There’s joy when the lost is found, when the stray is brought back home, when the doubter believes, when the sinner is forgiven.

Up there in heaven. Down here on earth. God is in heaven. We are here on earth. Except for Jesus. He’s different. He’s the only one who has come down from heaven and lived on earth. The angles in heaven will from time to time come down for a moment, to give a message, or fight a demon, or help us from danger. But Jesus Christ, the Son of the Most High, is the only one who came from heaven, to dwell and to abide on this earthly sphere. He came here, because here is where the sinners are. He was anointed to save sinners, you and all sinners. And so He came here, with some news about what is going on in heaven.

There’s joy in heaven. And Your Lord Jesus, wants you to partake with Him and the angels in that eternal joy.

There’s joy in heaven, says Jesus. Every time a sinner repents and believes God’s forgiveness. There is joy in heaven. True joy. Real joy. Sinfulness is not as enjoyable as it is cracked up to be. That’s often the temptation, isn’t it? It’s like you and I got the short end of the stick. Everyone else is having fun. We are in the doldrums of boring, tedious work and life. We have to love God and love our neighbor. Meanwhile all the sinners are eating and drinking and laughing it up. The temptation to sin is that there’s more fun in darkness than in light. More enjoyment will come out of evil than good. Doing our righteous duty will always be a burden, sin is exciting and fun. Oh, what silly lies our human nature will fall for.

The shepherd who is good at his job, has the determination to leave all else behind and go find the one lost sheep. The dear woman who is missing a silver coin will be relentless in her search until she has found it. Jesus the Son of God in heaven has come for you with relentless determination to rescue you. All He wanted was to pull you out of the mess you were in and get you back home. He would not rest if you were lost in the temptations and sins of human nature and life on this earth. He would not sit back and let you perish in the lostness of death. He came to us and found us.

Now He continually guides His people, His flock. He treasures you. He from heaven has joy about you who repent and believe in Him. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Pastor:     Let us pray.

Almighty and eternal God, worthy to be held in reverence by all the children of men, we give you humble and hearty thanks for the countless blessings which without any merit or worthiness on our part you have bestowed on us.

We praise you especially that you have preserved for us your saving Word and the holy sacraments.  And we implore you, O Lord, to grant and preserve to your holy Church throughout the world purity of doctrine and faithful pastors to preach your Word with power.  Help all who hear the Word rightly to understand and truly to believe it.  Send laborers into your harvest, and open the door of faith to those who do not know you.  In mercy remember the enemies of your Church and grant them repentance to life.  Protect and defend your Church in all tribulation and danger.  Strengthen us and all fellow Christians to set our hope fully on the grace revealed in Christ, and help us to fight the good fight of faith that in the end we may receive the salvation of our souls.

Bestow your grace on all nations of the earth.  Bless especially our country and its inhabitants and all who are in authority.  Let your glory dwell in our land that mercy and truth, righteousness and peace may everywhere abound.  We commend to you the care of all our schools and ask you to grant that our children may grow in useful knowledge and Christian virtue and bring forth wholesome fruits of life.

Graciously defend us from all calamity by fire and water, from war and pestilence, from scarcity and famine, and from every other evil.  Protect and prosper everyone in his rightful calling, and let all useful arts flourish among us.  Be the God and Father of the widow and the fatherless, the helper of the sick and needy, and the comforter of the forsaken and distressed.

As we are strangers and pilgrims on earth, help us by true faith and a godly life to prepare for the world to come, doing the work you have given us to do while it is day, before the night comes when no one can work.  And when our last hour comes, support us by your power, and receive us into your heavenly kingdom; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

People:    Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

BENEDICTION

524 HOW SWEET THE NAME OF JESUS SOUNDS
1     How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
    In a believer’s ear!
It soothes our sorrows, heals our wounds,
    And drives away our fear.

2     It makes the wounded spirit whole
    And calms the heart’s unrest;
’Tis manna to the hungry soul
    And to the weary, rest.

3     Dear name! The rock on which I build,
    My shield and hiding place;
My never-failing treasury filled
    With boundless stores of grace.

4     O Jesus, shepherd, guardian, friend,
    My Prophet, Priest, and King,
My Lord, my life, my way, my end,
    Accept the praise I bring.

5     How weak the effort of my heart,
    How cold my warmest thought!
But when I see Thee as Thou art,
    I’ll praise Thee as I ought.

6     Till then I would Thy love proclaim
    With ev’ry fleeting breath;
And may the music of Thy name
    Refresh my soul in death!

For this I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations,
and sing to your name.
C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost;

OLD TESTAMENT READING Proverbs 9:1–10
1Wisdom has built her house;
she has hewn her seven pillars.
2She has slaughtered her beasts; she has mixed her wine;
she has also set her table.
3She has sent out her young women to call
from the highest places in the town,
4“Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!”
To him who lacks sense she says,
5“Come, eat of my bread
and drink of the wine I have mixed.
6Leave your simple ways, and live,
and walk in the way of insight.”
7Whoever corrects a scoffer gets himself abuse,
and he who reproves a wicked man incurs injury.
8Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you;
reprove a wise man, and he will love you.
9Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser;
teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.
10The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.

A This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

HOLY GOSPEL
P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the fourteenth chapter.

15When one of those who reclined at table with [Jesus] heard these things, he said to him, “Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!” 16But he said to him, “A man once gave a great banquet and invited many. 17And at the time for the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’ 18But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. Please have me excused.’ 19And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them. Please have me excused.’ 20And another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’ 21So the servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and crippled and blind and lame.’ 22And the servant said, ‘Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.’ 23And the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled. 24For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet.’”

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

SERMON
Luke 14:15-24
Jesus Christ is the greatest preacher ever. He knew the human condition and how to address it, and how to fix it. He preached with truth and wisdom from on high. He wove in stories and anecdotes. So all these years later we have much to think on and take to heart each time we hear His preaching.
So let’s spend some moments, listening afresh to this parable He preached about the invitations to a grand banquet. It’s about the kingdom of God. But at the surface,
I. It’s about kindness.
 Jesus’ point is much higher, spiritual. The people and events portrayed in the story, stand for the real message. But let’s first just consider the event itself and the story Jesus told. A generous host sends a gracious invitation. “Come!” he says. I want company. I want my house filled with guests.” There was some special occasion, an unmentioned reason to celebrate and this man thinks, “There is nothing I would enjoy more on this special day than to share it with many friends.” But to his sadness, everybody he wants to have with him is busy. “Please, have me excused.” They say.
Now, granted, there are urgent things that come up, important business, family matters. But it was very clear what they were saying in response to the invitation: “There are things more important to me than you.” You ever said that to someone? “There are things more important to me than you.” I can’t imagine you would, but does it ever come across that way? Are the words, “Not now” over the years, beginning to sound like “There are things more important to me than you.” “Not now, maybe later.” Keep in mind, we are all running out of “later.”
But learn the lesson of graciousness from the man who still wants his banquet to be packed. “Bring in the poor and the beggars, the travelers and the foreigners.” With grace and hospitality, he is bound and determined to be generous.
Times have changed, and recently, they’ve changed quite a bit. We need to be finding creative ways to be kind. We need, each of us, to come up with ways to think of others. To be kind to others. To tell them with our words or our attitudes or our small deeds, “You are important to me”.
Jesus tells this story for his listeners to think about how to be kind, gracious and hospitable, but really, the message was for them to think about the Kingdom of God.
II. It’s about the Kingdom of God.
May it never be that any of us would say to God, “There are things more important to me than you.” Let nothing stand in our way from His gracious invitation to live in His Kingdom and dine at his banquet.
There is a feast planned of universal scope, on a cosmic scale. God Almighty wants to celebrate. The occasion is this: He is so pleased with His Son, Jesus. When Jesus died on the cross and rose back to life on the third day, He saved His Father’s creation. Now His Father, the master of the heavenly banquet says to all those He loves, “Come! You’re invited. I want you at my home, at my table. Come, for everything is now ready.”
Why would we let anything seem more important than that? But stuff does come up, doesn’t it? We have our daily obligations. Jesus listed off some people who asked to be excused from the banquet, oh, because, one guy was in the process of buying a piece of land, one guy just got some new livestock in, and one guy just got married. Is Jesus implying that we should leave all the selling and buying behind, that we shouldn’t spend time with our spouse and family? Shall we put away all the things and relationships of life in this world and be monks and nuns and live as hermits? Do the Amish have it right when they withdraw from so much of society and worldly ways?
Or better, can we live our days in such a way that all things and all events and everything about us is brought into the life we have been given by Jesus, and His Father who has called us into His kingdom. When we conduct our work and our commerce we are engaged in serving one another, by doing our work faithfully so that others benefit from it, and we pay fairly for the services others do to us. That is our daily calling because we are both at the same time, part of the Kingdom of God in eternity and part of this temporary order here on earth. And we love our wife or husband, mother and father and trust that it is a blessing to them that we are a part of God’s Kingdom and joyful celebration. And because we truly love our loved ones, we hope and pray for the most important thing for them, that they too receive with faith that blessed invitation from the Lord, “Come, for everything is now ready.” And just as we value our relationships with them now, our greatest desire is to have them with us in the eternal heavenly banquet in the age to come.
But Jesus didn’t just tell this story because it’s about the eternal future. It is important for us to hear and know it in the present time. This story Jesus tells is about kindness, it’s about the Kingdom of God, but finally, let’s consider this,
III.  It’s about the Bread of Life.
Jesus started this story in response to a statement some man made, “Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!” A true statement indeed. This banquet, this eating and drinking and celebration that Jesus is laying out for us in this story, is happening already. Do you believe that? It’s not just for you to imagine some day in the far off future. It is now. The Kingdom of God is now. He is inviting you into it. “Come, for everything is now ready.” And this is how you should listen to that invitation. First, repent. Repent of all the times when you have let things be more important to you than God. You’ve heard me say such things like that a lot, I know. But it’s what we all need to hear, because we are all hesitant to repent. I mean, really repent. Tearing down the self preservation defenses that we have that makes us not want to look bad and say we were wrong. Repent that you haven’t loved God above everything else and that you haven’t loved other people like you should, because your stuff has seemed more important to you than they.
So repent and then hear what God’s got to say, “Come, for everything is now ready.” He wants to tell you “Come to my house. Eat the bread of life. Drink from the cup of blessing. I want you to rejoice with me, because you are important to me.” Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
P Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.

Heavenly Father, by Your grace we who were once far off have been brought near to You by the blood of Your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. Remove from us all pride and vanity, and give to us humble hearts that recognize that You have graciously made us members of Your household, without any merit or worthiness in us. Lord, in Your mercy,
C hear our prayer.

P Gracious Father, continue to raise up faithful servants among us, that the invitation to Your great banquet would be delivered in all places and Your banquet hall would be filled with sinners redeemed by Christ the Crucified. Lord, in Your mercy,
C hear our prayer.

P Merciful Father, look upon the poor, hungry, homeless and unemployed with compassion, and tend to their needs. Remove from us any excess love of earthly treasures, that we would be moved to aid when able. Bless the charitable organizations and social agencies of our land, that relief would be found in them for those who need it, especially those affected by the pandemic and the response to it. Lord, in Your mercy,
C hear our prayer.

P Loving Father, bestow Your blessing on the vocation of fatherhood, that fathers would love and provide for their children, and that children would respect and honor their fathers. Lord, in Your mercy,
C hear our prayer.

P Compassionate Father, have mercy on all who are suffering and desire Your aid at the present time [especially _____________]. According to Your gracious will, heal their infirmities and give them strength to bear all their crosses in Christian patience. Give continued wisdom to those who lead and those who serve, especially those in harm’s way. Lord, in Your mercy,
C hear our prayer.

P Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who has taught us to pray:
C Our Father who art in heaven,
     hallowed be Thy name,
     Thy kingdom come,
     Thy will be done on earth
          as it is in heaven;
     give us this day our daily bread;
     and forgive us our trespasses
          as we forgive those
          who trespass against us;
     and lead us not into temptation,
     but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom
     and the power and the glory
     forever and ever. Amen.

BENEDICTION
P The Lord bless you and keep you.
The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you.
The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and T give you peace.
C Amen.

570 JUST AS I AM, WITHOUT ONE PLEA

1 Just as I am, without one plea
But that Thy blood was shed for me
And that Thou bidd’st me come to Thee,
    O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

2 Just as I am and waiting not
To rid my soul of one dark blot,
To Thee, whose blood can cleanse each spot,
    O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

3 Just as I am, though tossed about
With many_a conflict, many_a doubt,
Fightings and fears within, without,
    O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

4 Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind;
Sight, riches, healing of the mind,
Yea, all I need, in Thee to find,
    O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

5 Just as I am, Thou wilt receive,
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
Because Thy promise I believe,
    O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

6 Just as I am; Thy love unknown
Has broken ev’ry barrier down;
Now to be Thine, yea, Thine alone,
    O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

INVOCATION
P    In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C    Amen.

P    O God, the strength of all who trust in You, mercifully accept our prayers; and because through the weakness of our mortal nature we can do no good thing, grant us Your grace to keep Your commandments that we may please You in both will and deed; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
 C   Amen.

Psalm 33:12–22
12Blessèd is the nation whose God is the Lord,
   the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!
13The Lord looks down from heaven;
   he sees all the children of man;
14from where he sits enthroned he looks out
   on all the inhabitants of the earth,
15he who fashions the hearts of them all
   and observes all their deeds.
16The king is not saved by his great army;
   a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.
17The war horse is a false hope for salvation,
   and by its great might it cannot rescue.
18Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him,
   on those who hope in his steadfast love,
19that he may deliver their soul from death
   and keep them alive in famine.
20Our soul waits for the Lord;
   he is our help and our shield.
21For our heart is glad in him,
   because we trust in his holy name.
22Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us,
   even as we hope in you.

P    Glory be to God on high:
C    and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.
We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we worship Thee,
we glorify Thee, we give thanks to Thee, for Thy great glory.
O Lord God, heav’nly King, God the Father Almighty.
O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ;
O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,
that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us.
Thou that takest away the sin of the world, receive our prayer.
Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us.
For Thou only art holy; Thou only art the Lord.
Thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost,
art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

HOLY GOSPEL                                                                                                                                  Luke 16:19–31
P    The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the sixteenth chapter.

   19[Jesus said:] “There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. 20And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried, 23and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. 24And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’ 25But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. 26And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’ 27And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house— 28for I have five brothers—so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ 29But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ 30And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’”

P    This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C    Praise be to Thee, O Christ.

SERMON

Luke 16:22 The poor man (Lazarus) died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side.

It is a good thing to hear how Jesus talks about heaven and hell. There are several things we can learn from this passage. In heaven we will recognize people, important people who have gone before us, important people to us, who have been separated from us by death. Abraham lives. His soul is awake, though his body has been dead for thousands of years. He speaks to newcomers who enter into the heavenly realms. Those who are dear to us, we will see again. We have that hope because Jesus lives, and He will bring all His loved ones together to Himself in heaven.

We also learn from Jesus here that angels carry the soul to heaven. What an honor that will be! What glory!

Then, there’s this Chasm between heaven and hell, that we cannot cross. Let that be a word of dire warning for all men, women and children. In Hebrews chapter 9 it says, “it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment”.

But the lesson today from this story Jesus told is this: There are only two kinds of people: Those for heaven. Those for hell.

Too often there’s talk about the different kinds of people: There are those who speak this language or that language; There are those whose skin is this color or another color; There are the rich and the poor, the haves and the have nots. All such differences are superficial, temporary and often, only imagined, not real differences.

Take the difference between the rich and the poor. Economists and politicians like to make a lot of hay out of that. But consider the two men in Jesus’ story: the rich man and Lazarus. You can hardly imagine any two men more different than these two. One feasted sumptuously, every day; One begged for scraps. One was clothed in fine, fancy clothes; one was covered in sores. One held parties with A-list guests; one had only dogs for company.

But then comes a moment in the telling of this story where all these differences are made completely insignificant. Both men died. And in death nothing else mattered. Money can’t change death. Popularity can’t prevent death. The comforts and pleasures of this life are at the instant of death, made completely meaningless. Death has a great leveling affect on all of humanity. No matter what we have or what we lack, no matter how we dress or how we look, death treats us all exactly the same.

It puzzles me why there must be race riots in the year 2020. Why do we still have race as an issue. It’s one of those superficial differences among people.

I try to be very careful how I use that word race. We who believe in God who created us, know that there aren’t races of people. There is one race. When Paul preached in Athens, Greece, he said, “God made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth”.

The talk of races better fits in the world view of the evolutionists who suppose that humankind, without any help from God, rose up from ancient mud. Much mischief has been made from the horrible, evil idea that some of us have raised ourselves up higher than other races. As if some of us are more evolved.

There are only two kinds of people, those for heaven and those for hell.
It is sinful, egotistical and selfish to imagine that our other differences are important. It is selfish if I were to imagine than I am somehow totally different from other mortals.

Be careful of such ideas. Of course you don’t ever want to feel superior to others. Nor do you want to feel worse than all others. You ought never have a cause to feel sorry for yourself, saying something like, I have permission to despair, like no one else has ever despaired.

What all this with COVID 19 has brought on has been unprecedented, indeed. But that doesn’t make it so that you are somehow different than all the rest of humanity. Just because it is unprecedented doesn’t mean that now you are in such a unique situation that you can cheat your customers or cheat on your bills or cheat on your taxes. These may be extraordinary times, but not so extraordinary that we can say, we are different than others, different from what we used to be. We still must be responsible, kind and generous.

Nothing has changed to make us different inside. We are who God has made us to be and called us to be by faith.

The rich man in Hades, imagined that his was an exceptional case, so he tried to bargain on that basis. If his brothers had some special help, they wouldn’t end up in Hades, like him. Still thinking of Lazarus as his inferior, that he could order around, he wants to send him on an errand for him. He says, “If someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent” (Luke 16:30).

Abraham, the father of the faithful, in heaven answers him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’

There’s only two kinds of people in the world, those for heaven and those for hell. Another way of saying it is this, there’s only two kinds of people in the world, those who hear the Word of God and keep it, and those who don’t. Understanding this will shape how we think of ourselves and our neighbor.

All this other stuff only matters for the time being, if it matters at all. Riches and money, food and clothing, all that’s only for the here and now. Don’t let it be higher on the priority list than it deserves.

The differences among the nations and the cultures are superficial and not defining of who one truly is. What defines a person is his or her faith, or lack of faith.

Because all people come from one Creator and because all people have one common, ultimate problem, death, there is one and only one, fix for that problem of death, and that fix is Jesus. Jesus atoned for the sins of the world by his sacrificial death. The Gospel of Jesus is for all. All sorts of people can hear that Universal Gospel and be assured it’s for them.

May the Holy Spirit continue to work on people everywhere in every nation in every culture in every stratus, that they would hear their salvation and by it believe that they are not for hell, they are for heaven.  Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
P    Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.

God, our Father in heaven, look with mercy on us, Your needy children on earth, and grant us grace, that Your holy name would be hallowed by us and all the world through the pure and true teaching of Your Word and the fervent love shown forth in our lives. Graciously turn from us all false doctrine and evil living whereby Your precious name is blasphemed and profaned. Lord, in Your mercy,
C    hear our prayer.

P    May Your Kingdom come to us and expand. Bring all transgressors and those who are blinded and bound in the devil’s kingdom to know Jesus Christ, Your Son, by faith, that the number of Christians may be increased. Lord, in Your mercy,
C    hear our prayer.

P    Strengthen us by Your Spirit according to Your will, both in life and in death, in the midst of both good and evil things, that our own wills may be crucified daily and sacrificed to Your good and gracious will. Into Your merciful hands we commend all who are in need, praying for them at all times: Thy will be done. Lord, in Your mercy,
C    hear our prayer.

P    Grant us our daily bread, preserve us from greed and selfish cares, and help us trust in You to provide for all our needs. Lord, in Your mercy,
C    hear our prayer.

P    Forgive us our sins as we also forgive those who sin against us, that our hearts may be at peace and may rejoice in a good conscience before You, and that no sin may ever frighten or alarm us. Lord, in Your mercy,
C    hear our prayer.

P    Lead us not into temptation, O Lord, but help us by Your Spirit to subdue our flesh, to turn from the world and its ways, and to overcome the devil with all his wiles. Lord, in Your mercy,
C    hear our prayer.

P    And lastly, O heavenly Father, deliver us from all evil of both body and soul, now and forever. Lord, in Your mercy,
C    hear our prayer.

P    We trust, O Lord, in Your great mercy to hear and answer us; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
C    Amen.

728 HOW FIRM A FOUNDATION
1     How firm a foundation, O saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word!
What more can He say than to you He has said
Who unto the Savior for refuge have fled?

2     “Fear not! I am with you, O be not dismayed,
For I am your God and will still give you aid;
I’ll strengthen you, help you, and cause you to stand,
Upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand.

3     “The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose
I will not, I will not, desert to his foes;
That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I’ll never, no never, no never, forsake!

4     “When through fiery trials your pathway will lie,
My grace, all-sufficient, will be your supply.
The flames will not hurt you; I only design
Your dross to consume and your gold to refine.

5     “Throughout all their lifetime My people will prove
My sov’reign, eternal, unchangeable love;
And then, when gray hairs will their temples adorn,
Like lambs they will still in My bosom be borne.”
