Evening Prayer

                                                                                                3/18/2020
+ SERVICE OF LIGHT +

L    Jesus Christ is the Light of the world,
C    the light no darkness can overcome.

L    Stay with us, Lord, for it is evening,
C    and the day is almost over.

L    Let Your light scatter the darkness
C    and illumine Your Church.

L    Joyous light of glory:
C    of the immortal Father;
heavenly, holy, blessed Jesus Christ.
We have come to the setting of the sun,
and we look to the evening light.
We sing to God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit:
You are worthy of being praised
with pure voices forever.
O Son of God, O Giver of life:
the universe proclaims Your glory.

L    Blessèd are You, O Lord our God, king of the universe, who led Your people Israel by a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. Enlighten our darkness by the light of Your Christ; may His Word be a lamp to our feet and a light to our path; for You are merciful, and You love Your whole creation and we, Your creatures, glorify You, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
C    Amen.

PSALM 69
9For zeal for your house has consumed me,
   and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.
10When I wept and humbled my soul with fasting,
   it became my reproach.
11When I made sackcloth my clothing,
   I became a byword to them.
12I am the talk of those who sit in the gate,
   and the drunkards make songs about me.
13But as for me, my prayer is to you, O Lord.
   At an acceptable time, O God,
   in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness.
14Deliver me
   from sinking in the mire;
let me be delivered from my enemies
   and from the deep waters.
15Let not the flood sweep over me,
   or the deep swallow me up,
   or the pit close its mouth over me.
16Answer me, O Lord, for your steadfast love is good;
   according to your abundant mercy, turn to me.
17Hide not your face from your servant;
   for I am in distress;
   make haste to answer me.
18Draw near to my soul, redeem me;
   ransom me because of my enemies!
19You know my reproach,
   and my shame and my dishonor;
   my foes are all known to you.
20Reproaches have broken my heart,
   so that I am in despair.
I looked for pity, but there was none,
   and for comforters, but I found none.
21They gave me poison for food,
   and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.
22Let their own table before them become a snare;
   and when they are at peace, let it become a trap.
23Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see,
   and make their loins tremble continually.
24Pour out your indignation upon them,
   and let your burning anger overtake them.
25May their camp be a desolation;
   let no one dwell in their tents.
26For they persecute him whom you have struck down,
   and they recount the pain of those you have wounded.
27Add to them punishment upon punishment;
   may they have no acquittal from you.
28Let them be blotted out of the book of the living;
   let them not be enrolled among the righteous.
29But I am afflicted and in pain;
   let your salvation, O God, set me on high!
30I will praise the name of God with a song;
   I will magnify him with thanksgiving.

L    Let us pray.
Let the incense of our repentant prayer ascend before You, O Lord, and let Your loving-kindness descend on us that, with purified minds, we may sing Your praises with the Church on earth and the whole heavenly host and may glorify You forever.
C    Amen.

Matthew 27:1–26
   1When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death. 2And they bound him and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate the governor.
   3Then when Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus was condemned, he changed his mind and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, 4saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? See to it yourself.” 5And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, he departed, and he went and hanged himself. 6But the chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is blood money.” 7So they took counsel and bought with them the potter’s field as a burial place for strangers. 8Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. 9Then was fulfilled what had been spoken by the prophet Jeremiah, saying, “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him on whom a price had been set by some of the sons of Israel, 10and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.”
   11Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus said, “You have said so.” 12But when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he gave no answer. 13Then Pilate said to him, “Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?” 14But he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed.
   15Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted. 16And they had then a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. 17So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” 18For he knew that it was out of envy that they had delivered him up. 19Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today in a dream.” 20Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. 21The governor again said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” 22Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Let him be crucified!” 23And he said, “Why, what evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Let him be crucified!”
   24So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood; see to it yourselves.” 25And all the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!” 26Then he released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified.

L    In many and various ways, God spoke to His people of old by the prophets.
C    But now in these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son.

SERMON

Psalm 69:29
    But I am afflicted and in pain;
        let your salvation, O God, set me on high!
In  John chapter 2, Jesus drove the money changers out of the temple in Jerusalem, because they were making a mess of the place and keeping people from worshipping properly, and then it says,  (vs 17) His disciples remembered that it was written, "Zeal for your house will consume me." That’s written here in Psalm 69. The disciples got that this Psalm is primarily about Jesus.
It’s clear also in the verse that says “for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.”  Which is what they did to Jesus at the crucifixion.
So also these words: But I am afflicted and in pain; let your salvation, O God, set me on high!
As our Lord was afflicted and in pain, He looked to His heavenly Father. He expected help and deliverance from on high. The answer to His plea came when He rose again on the third day, ascended into heaven and was seated at the right hand of God Almighty on high.
God the Father answered the prayer of His Son Jesus, who prayed,
    But as for me, my prayer is to you, O Lord.
        At an acceptable time, O God,
        in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness.  (69:13)
This Psalm can become our prayer too. We are afflicted and in pain. Afflicted with a pandemic and all the trouble that it is causing. Some are already feeling the pain in the pocketbook as all the trouble is causing economic loss. Too many people are afflicted with fear. Caution is called for. Fear is destructive.
Faith displaces fear. So let this be your ongoing prayer: I am afflicted and in pain; let your salvation, O God, set me on high!
On high -- When the trumpet sounds and the Lord Jesus returns He will lift His beloved people from their graves and restore us to the high and perfect life in paradise.
On high – When death comes to us, perhaps soon, perhaps many years in the future, we have our Lord’s promise that He will send His angels to lift up our soul and take it on High to be with Him.
On high – When sickness and weakness get us down, the Spirit of God will call us through His word to lift up our eyes and our attitudes, so that even when afflicted we can praise God.
On high – When foolish fears fill our heads and innards and wreak havoc on us, we remembered that Jesus died even for our sins of fearing too much. And in repentance and faith we ask Him, “let your salvation, O God, set me on high!”
On high – When our God provides the opportunity, when he allows this plague to pass, we will again be able to come together and have Word and Sacrament properly, to eat of His Holy Communion in the foretaste of the feast to come on high.
Until then we believe. We pray. We wait.
Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER                                                                                                                                      LSB 251
L    Taught by our Lord and trusting His promises, we are bold to pray:
C    Our Father who art in heaven,
     hallowed be Thy name,
     Thy kingdom come,
     Thy will be done on earth
          as it is in heaven;
     give us this day our daily bread;
     and forgive us our trespasses
          as we forgive those
          who trespass against us;
     and lead us not into temptation,
     but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom
     and the power and the glory
     forever and ever. Amen.

BENEDICAMUS                                                                                                                                       L    Let us bless the Lord.
C    Thanks be to God.

BENEDICTION
P    The almighty and merciful Lord, the Father, the T Son, and the Holy Spirit, bless and preserve you.
C    Amen.

880 NOW REST BENEATH NIGHT’S SHADOW
1     Now rest beneath night’s shadow
The woodland, field, and meadow;
    The world in slumber lies.
But you, my heart, awaking
And prayer and music making,
    Let praise to your Creator rise.

2     The radiant sun has vanished,
Its golden rays are banished
    From dark’ning skies of night;
But Christ, the Sun of gladness,
Dispelling all our sadness,
    Shines down on us in warmest light.

3     Now all the heav’nly splendor
Breaks forth in starlight tender
    From myriad worlds unknown;
And we, this marvel seeing,
Forget our selfish being
    For joy of beauty not our own.

4     Lord Jesus, since You love me,
Now spread Your wings above me
    And shield me from alarm.
Though Satan would devour me,
Let angel guards sing o’er me:
    This child of God shall meet no harm.

5     My loved ones, rest securely,
For God this night will surely
    From peril guard your heads.
Sweet slumbers may He send you
And bid His hosts attend you
    And through the night watch o’er your beds.
